About

Summer Mensah has been a flautist for 14 years. Her training was guided by teachers including: Allison Langridge, Courtney Martin, Veronica Sutherland and Dr. Kelly Kazik. From middle school to high school, she would compete among hundreds of flautists in the state- her highest chair was 2nd in the State.

In 2015, she was accepted to the University of North Texas where she studied as a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Flute. For two years, she was guided by professors such as Terri Sundberg, Elizabeth McNutt, Dean James Scott and Dr. Veronica Mascaro. During that time, she was also a member of the West African African Drumming Ensemble led by Gideon Alorwoyie.

However, as her technical skill grew, so did her creative desire. In 2017 Summer began composing and producing original music. She won first place in BandLab’s songwriting competition. With those winnings, she began to create her first home recording studio.

Between 2017 and 2018, she grew skill in voice, bass guitar, electric guitar and piano. She created music that was a hybrid of jazz, classical, Electronic and R&B. In that home studio, Summer produced her first Album in 2019 called “Spaceship Music”.

“…It’s an album that used atmospheric harmony to trace her growth production and tell unique stories of young adult hood.”

Summer was also a reoccurring live performer at Date Night with Chef Kendall Selby in Waldorf, Maryland. As a performer, she entertained audiences exploring flute improvisation over Bossa Nova.

In summer of 2019, Summer won the Tracklanta competition with BandLab. After submitting her own remix of an R&B track by Bryan Michael-Cox, her submission was selected which allowed her a chance to be mentored by the producer in Doppler Studios. (A studio that has been visited by talent such as Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Luther Vandross, and Justin Bieber).

Amidst the pandemic, Summer began teaching flute lessons, live streaming concerts and composing new music with cinematic influences. In fall of 2021 her newest EP called "A Sonic Sketchbook” was released.

“It is collection of music designed for stage and screen.”

Finally in the summer of 2022, Summer debuted at the Threads of Me Concert in Stafford and Richmond, Virginia. She performed original music and covers alongside singer-songwriter Emily Roig. They released a song called “95” in July of 2022.

Currently Summer is pursuing a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies at Berklee Online, releasing new music online, and collaborating with/mentoring other musicians. Look forward to seeing the new things Summer brings to the table.
